Overview:

Dr. Blanding’s early career included in-house consulting in Acoustics with the Engineering Department at Union Carbide as well as teaching Mechanical Vibration and other undergraduate ME courses at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

His 33 years with the DuPont Company was in the Engineering Department as a Mechanical Engineering Consultant. This focused primarily on problem-solving at plants across many businesses applying the above specialties. Dr. Blanding’s primary client was Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), with numerous locations in the US and abroad. These are 2000+ bar ethylene-based systems involving very high-energy reciprocating compressors and metering pumps with significant challenges in the areas of vibration, cyclic stress, and fatigue failures. Work included similar challenges with other businesses also involved high-pressure liquid and gas systems in the 500-1,000 bar range. He worked a great deal also with mechanical design and vibration diagnostics in film and web transport systems.

Dr. Blanding currently serves on the Pump Advisory Committee for the Turbomachinery and Pump Symposium (TPS), sponsored by the Turbomachinery Laboratory at Texas A&M University.
