Vibration in industrial equipment and facilities may lead to piping degradation, failure, loss of production, or safety issues. Unfortunately, vibration is often ignored until a failure occurs or when someone notices vibrating equipment.

Vibration risks are often addressed at the design stage using good engineering judgment by experienced designers, but constructing piping to ASME B31 doesn’t guarantee vibration fatigue protection.

Unfortunately, the rules to prevent vibration-prone designs are not well standardized and the tools available in the industry are not well known. 

Small-bore piping failures due to vibration are one of the most common loss of containment events in our industry.  Once failures occur, many root-cause failure assessments have the advantage of hindsight when determining that the branch connection would have benefited from improved bracing. 

How can you improve your facilities to reduce the risk of small-bore failures without bracing every connection?

Standard risk-based inspection (RBI) doesn’t account for the effects of vibration and fatigue on piping.  E2G has developed a scalable tool called Vibration Risk-Based Inspection (VRBI) to identify high-risk vibration-prone piping circuits so proactive measures target on the highest risk piping.
